Ajesh Mehta, Convener of the Diamond Panel, GJEPC, went live this morning during the USA Prime time of BBC NEWS for an interaction highlighting the severe impact of rising U.S. tariffs on the Indian diamond and jewellery industry.
Exports to the U.S. fell by nearly 32% in April–July 2025, dropping to USD 2.12 billion from USD 3.12 billion during the same period last year.
With tariffs already at 25% and the looming possibility of 50%, Mehta warned that the industry faces “deeply concerning times,” with factory shutdowns in Surat and other hubs, along with significant job losses across the value chain.
